Armenian Songs

The Armenians are a nation and ethnic group which originated in the Caucasus and the Armenian Highland, and it is estimated that there are eight million Armenians around the world. There is a large gathering of Armenians in the Caucasus, especially in Armenia, and there is a significant presence in Georgia, Iran, Russia, and Ukraine. The different genres of Armenian music are Christian music, folk music, the Armenian diaspora, classical music, pop music, rock music and epic songs etc…

Classical music and the operatic genre have always been important to the Armenian vocal performing arts and the most outstanding performers have been: Haykanush Danielyan, Gohar Gasparian, Gohar Galachian, Tatevik Sazandarian, and Anna Nshanian. The most common kind of religious music in Armenia is the Armenian chant, composed in one of eight modes. Folk songs including women’s work songs, that is plowing songs or songs of the field and all work songs specify something of the working process and are sung to go along with work. Singing helps the peasant not only during the period of work, but to tolerate and overcome the trials and difficulties of life.

In Armenian music tradition, epic songs are categorized into two categories. The one contains mythological themes of pagan Armenia like “Haik and Bel”, “Dork Angegh. The others are the so-called heroic songs telling about the history and the traditions of these people and their heroes, such as e.g. “Sasuntzi Davith” dealing with the escapades of the hero of epics.

The most prominent female representatives of modern Armenian pop music include Bella Darbinyan, Raisa Mkrtchyan, and the Armenian male pop performers in the world today are Adiss Harmandian, Paul Baghdadlian, Sahag Sislian, Harout Pamboukjian, Joseph Krikorian, Garo Gomidas, Vrej Sahagian, Ararad Aharonian, Gomidas Band & Hovsep, Koko & The Sbidag Band, Paul Baghdadlian Jr., Robert Chilingirian, Sako, Zareh, Garo Gaboudagian, Andre and Arsen Grigorian are prominent Armenian & International performers
