Coins
William Somerset said “Money is like a sixth sense – and you can’t make use of the other five without it”. It is so true that money is what keeps the world rolling. Can you even imagine our world without money? No never.
But whenever we think of money we think of the currency in the form of notes. Do you realize that even coins are money but in a different form? In older times when countries were ruled by kings or maharajas, there were no note currencies but only gold coins commonly known as “sone ki asharfis” in India. They were used to barter items such as cattle or agricultural produce. These coins without any denomination attached to them, either carried a picture of the king who ruled around the time when these coins were made or of the freedom fighter that was recognized by the government as a great contributor in a country’s development.
As the price of gold started touching the skies, gold coins were replaced by silver coins. Soaring high prices of silver lead to the creation of metallic coins which all of us use today for our daily needs. These metallic coins were of different denominations though. But festivals are still associated with purchase and gifting of gold and silver coins. Gold coins today are mostly bought for investment purposes for any future need. They are the best form of investment in gold because there are no making charges levied on its purchase and one can get the total exchange against it at the then prevalent gold rate.
‘Nuismatics’ or the collection of rare currency has become popular as a hobby for some or for the purpose of collecting them for auctions. Coins which become redundant because of the introduction of new denominations are labeled as ‘Numismatic coins’. These form a part of an antique collection for which experts pay any price.
So my dear friends, if you have coins of denominations which are not valid today, you surely have antique prized possessions.
