How to Write a Perfect Resume

Writing a great Resumes is no science, it is a simple art. As long as you keep some basic principles of resume writing in mind, it should do what it is intended to do. Drafting a perfect resume does not mean you need to follow all the rules you read or hear, it should just be appropriate to your situation and be a good marketing communication. A well written resume is bound to invite you for an interview even in faces of fierce competition. Remember 80% of the first screenings happen through the resumes. It ought to create the first impression.

  1. Know the intention of your resume: A well written resume is nothing more than an advertisement to sell yourself. Just like a good advertisement that gets spoken about and catches the eyes of million, a fine resume catches the eye of the job offerer and becomes a part of the small stack of resumes that will be called for an interview.
  2. Misconceptions about a resume: If you think your resume is paper that would lead to a job offer, it isn’t. It is not history of your past. It has to be written with an intention to create interest and to persuade the employer to call you for an interview. A resume should never be written grudgingly with the notion “I need to have one since the others have”. A well drafted masterpiece requires your real attention and enthusiasm.
  3. Resume Structure: Structure provides an impressive aura to your resume. Begin with your personal details to include full name and contact details. Educational and professional qualifications should be next; including name of institutions and dates attended in reverse order. Include computer skills and foreign language skills and any other recent training/development that is relevant to the role applied for. Then the Career history is presented in chronological order followed by achievements and responsibilities. Never forget to attach a Cover letter with the Resume.
  4. Highlight the skills relevant to the role applied for: Always ensure you are not sending a generic resume for a position that doesn’t highlight the key skills and experience that you have acquired for over the years and match the expectations of the employer. Doing so, will only end up making your resume land up in a bunch of rejected documents. With over a 1000 people applying for such positions, it is impossible for an employer to go through the entire resume and figure out the key skills himself.
  5. The job objective should match the profile: One of the most important thing to keep in mind while writing the Career Objective is to ensure that it is synchronized with the vacancy profile else it will not make sense to go through the next sections.
  6. Some basic rules: While focusing on the above, do not forget to lay emphasis on the very basics of writing – No punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors. Do not use colors, flashy designs, Italics, inconsistent fonts and jargons. Use action words like, coached, organized created etc. Do not run into pages, 1 or 2 at the maximum. Lastly, be honest!

Once you take care of the above basic pointers to write a good resume, you will realize that writing a resume really isn’t hard. All that one needs to do is to put in everything you can to show the prospective employer that you can add value to their role and you shall be the best choice for the position.
