Indian Railways
During the period of Independence in 1947, the railway network consisted of 10 government and 32 private railways including those belonging to former princely states.
To meet the demands of the industrial growth, the network was reorganized in 1950 with headquarters at existing major government and private railways. Thanks to the commuter traffic, Indian railways has registered an all round increase, with increasing clamor for better metro network serving suburbs.
Rail route is a preferred mode of traveling for most passengers traveling 500kms or more. Intercity trains are competing effectively with airlines and other modes of transportation and are very popular on some short-halt routes such as Delhi-Chandigarh, Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Agra, Chennai-Bangalore to name a few. Of course the millions of people of all income strata from middle-class backgrounds to the hungry- labour agricultural belt have no alternative other than the Indian Railways to organize their annual trips back home.
There have been a few initiatives taken by the Indian railways to maintain the food quality and safety of the passengers on board. Indian railways Catering Tourism Corporation ahs set up control rooms at New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai and Secunderabad. These zonal controls have been well equipped with all the communication facilities and are operational around the clock, seven days a week. This move by the Indian railways is very effective for monitoring of complaints and catering activities.
In order to facilitate lodging of complaints and suggestions by passenger’s facility of receipt of complaint through toll free no. 1800- 111-139 and through SMS on phone no. 9971-111-139 has been started. This enables the traveling passengers to have easy access to the complaints redressal system without any charges.
The multinational food audit and certification agency has been enlisted for the third party audit on food hygiene and safety audit. Recommendations for the same have been made for achieving further improvement in food hygiene and safety norms.
To measure the degree of satisfaction of travelers on Indian Railways leading market research firms are engaged to inspect on various aspects such as Food and refreshment, Bed roll and linen, Staff behavior and compartment related aspects to study and improve the growth of the Indian railways .
Till date Indian railways has been have retained their past heritage. Much improvement has also been brought about by continual efforts through growth of technology and education. Indian railways pioneering growth in enhancing economic and socio-economic is undeniable. Indian railway tourism industry is growing leaps and bounds.
