Pashtuns also called Pathans or ethnic Afghans are an Eastern Iranian ethno-linguistic group with populations primarily in Afghanistan and in the North-West Frontier Province, Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Balochistan provinces of Pakistan. The influences of neighboring cultures are reflected upon Afghan Music and lyrics are mostly in Persian and Pashto.
Pashto music can be primarily divided into two categories-the classical music and the traditional music .There are different genres of traditional Pashto music like the, tappa, charbeta, neemakai loba, shaan, badala, rubayi, etc.Tappa is the oldest and the most popular genre of the Pashto poetry, and it is the only song sung in the time of grief and on the occasion of marriage .Charbetta is another popular genre, which consists of an epic poem with special rhythms and all aspects of life are discussed in it .Loba is a form of folk music in which a story is told and requires two or more persons who reply to each other in a poetic form.Gazals are very popular among pashtoons and Rubayi is a Pashto form of a Ghazal. The Rubayis of Rehman Baba are popular among the masses and the Rubayi has been heavily influenced by Arabic, Persian and Turkish poetry.
The classical music is called klasik, which includes both instrumental and vocal and belly dancing ragas, as well as Tarana and Ghazals. The most famous Afghan Classical singer is Ustad Mohammad Hussain Sarahang, who is one of the Master singers in North Indian Classical Music and is also well-known in all over India and Pakistan.
The main instrument used in the Pashto music is the rubab which is the lute-like instrument and that is played in weddings and cultural performences.
