Music has always been an important part of Indian life and Carnatic music is south Indian classical music associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent: Andra Pradesh, Tamil nadu, Karanataka, Kerala. This is one of the worlds oldest & richest musical traditions.Purandardas is considered to be the father of Carnatic music and the credit of modification of the method of Carnatic music goes to him. He was the first composer who incorporated in his songs popular folk language and introduced folk ragas in the mainstream and the fusion of bhava, raga and laya into organic units.

Carnatic music is based on two main elements: raga and tala.Raga are basically the scale and the seven notes of this scale are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha and Ni. So complicated is the science of music that no one in the world has been able to create a single note of music other than the seven notes that are in trend. Tala is the rhythmic foundation of the Carnatic music which is defined based on complex arithmetic calculations and always occurs in cyclic pattern.

Most compositions in Carnatic music have three parts to their body. The first two lines of the song are called Pallavi which occurs after each stanza. Usually the Pallavi is followed by two more lines or sometimes just one more called Anu-Pallavi. This is sung at the beginning and sometimes even during the end of the song, but not after each stanza and the stanzas of a song are called Charanam. Carnatic Music is a very complicated system of music and to master this, one should dedicate himself to the rigorous training pattern that the music demands.

M.S. Subbulakshmi was a renowned Carnatic Vocalist, who was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Popular Carnatic vocalists of today include M. Balamuralikrishna, P. Unni Krishnan, Aruna Sairam, Priya Sisters, S. Sowmya, Sanjay Subrahmanyan, Sreevalsan J. Menon, Bombay Jayashri Ramnath, Ranjani & Gayatri, Vijay Siva, O. S. Arums, O. S. Thyagarajan, , Sriram Parasuram & Anuradha Parasuram, Sikkil C. Gurucharan, Vishakha Hari, S. Kasthurirangan etc. There are a large number of music web sites on the internet that offer you Carnatic classical music online.
