Vedic maths – doesn’t India’s contribution to it through its Vedas and India’s introduction of the number ‘0’ to the world come to your mind instantly?
Vedic maths was rediscovered by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji, a scholar of Mathematics, Sanskrit, History and Philosophy somewhere between 1911 and 1918. The entire system is based on 16 sutras or word-formulae. It is a combination of mental maths and invention of one’s own methods of solving a mathematical problem. The flexibility of the system makes learners more inquisitive to learn and more intuitive to perform. The system of Vedic maths works on a holistic mental development keeping it interesting at the same time. It is a very useful tool for slow learners as well. However the trick of perfecting it is that the more one practices the better one gets. Heard of the age-old phrase ‘Practice makes one perfect’? It holds true here.
It can solve mathematical problems related to algebra, algorithm and geometry to name a few. And guess what? In Vedic maths one needs to learn tables only up to 9. Isn’t that remarkable? The original version of Vedic maths is in Sanskrit but many Indian and foreign authors have translated it and written books on it to help simplify its concepts and to ensure a better understanding of its working. Its awareness has spread across the globe and it is even recognized by international programs such as GCSE which follow some of its methodologies.
Have you heard of Kumon or Abacus classes in your town? Yes you sure have. They too follow the basics of Vedic maths where the mental agility of a human mind is tickled to make it brighter and sharper. But these institutes have mushroomed all over and you need to make the right choice for your little angels!!
Because even the new generation mathematics systems are following the age old Vedic mathematical system we can say that if life goes full circle, so do education techniques!!
