What Is Commodity Trading?

In the investment market there is a new term which has gained popularity instantly i.e. commodities. But, what does the term ‘commodities’ mean? A whole group of goods such as foodstuff, fuel and metals come under ‘Commodities’. On the whole, commodities are natural resources which are extracted from the Earth. These natural resources are then consumed and used for human activities.

The prices of these commodities are decided on the basic principle of demand and supply. Consumption of these commodities by the human society is known as demand whereas supply refers to mining and farming and on a very small scale even recycling. Commodities do not differ much from place to place in terms of quality. For example, silver is silver whether found in Asia or Africa.

Since there is standardization in these qualities they become as useful tools for investment. Commodities can be traded using derivative tools such as futures. To buy the futures of an underlying commodity means that you have the right to buy a particular commodity at a particular price in the future. In between the price of the commodity can fluctuate but it doesn’t affect you. This makes your futures contracts also go up and down in price relying on which way the price of the commodity eventually goes in the future.

Commodities can be traded internationally through various exchanges all over the world. It is just like your stock exchange where you can buy and sell shares and their prices rise and fall daily. The prices are affected due to various factors such as economic, social, natural calamities, etc.

You should trade in Commodities Trading because it provides you the opportunity to earn from trading commodity futures by their prediction and judgment on any particular commodity. But, it is advisable to first research on the commodity you want to invest on and then analyze how its price differs or fluctuates.
